Welcome to Girdwood Summer!

Hello, and welcome to Girdwood Summer.  This blog will follow the travels of Scott Wotring and Jessica Swanson on their drive from North Carolina to Alaska in spring 2011 and their summer spent working and exploring in Girdwood, Alaska.

After six years in marketing in North Carolina, the siren song of Alaska became too strong to resist, sparking Scott’s resignation and putting into motion a long-lusted plan for he and Jess to leave their hometown of Raleigh and pursue a life-list adventure to include an epic transcontinental road trip and a summer of first-class hiking, biking, climbing and exploring the massive and mystical lands of the last frontier.

Both Scott and Jess will contribute to the blog — posting stories, photos, videos and commentary along the way.  We invite you to follow the adventure and be part of our Girdwood Summer.

Thanks Carol! We are having so much fun and it’s amazing to see the country the way we are. We’re heading to Portland, OR today. We’re over half way there, hard to believe 🙂

Reminds me of my younger days…hiked 15 miles to school in the sleet and snow (South Georgia?)
The scenery is just beautiful…Take care and have a good time…Hopefully the only bears you encounter will be teddy bears…..

Frank! Hi there, hope all is well. We’re in the wild west now and heading to bear country. I keep telling myself they are just gummy bears:) We’re having the best time ever and loving every second of it.

  9. Scott and Jess-

I am hooked! You guys are having the adventure of a lifetime and the blog captures it perfectly – at least as close to perfectly as a reader can get without being there. Beautiful photos and I love the writing/commentary from both of you. Keep it up and HAVE FUN!

      Tuna,

Thank you! Scott is doing an amazing job of blogging and his pictures just keep getting better and better. It doesn’t hurt that the scenery keeps getting more amazing. We are in Coure d’ Alene, ID. We’re going for a jog around the lake this morning and heading to Portland this afternoon. I can’t wait! Coure d’ Alene is where they host an IM. I can see why, wow! You and Mel have an open invite to AK!
